Private Violin & Viola Instruction

I can honestly say that I love being a violin teacher.  It’s unbelievably rewarding to be a part of a student’s growth with the instrument and the music.  I also teach beginning viola.  Please read the testimonials below from several of my students. Some of my students are pictured on this site too.  Click on the Photo Gallery tab to see them.

I like for my students to have fun at lessons and we do, but proper techniques are a must.  It amazes me when a student comes to me from another teacher and they haven’t been taught the importance of a proper bow hold or left hand posture.  I always compare playing a musical instrument to playing sports- you have to learn the basics correctly to build the foundation to become a better player, regardless of whether you want to be a classical violinist, a fiddler or even a rock violinist.

Even early in development my students use several books, playing etudes, songs (both fun and serious) and duets with me, which are always fun and educational.  I’ve also developed exercises that address specific technique-building areas, which are assigned to students as needed.

Any mention of teaching wouldn’t be complete without thanks to my friend and mentor Bill Engelsman, who is an incredible violin teacher and has helped me so much toward becoming a good teacher myself.

Member of the American String Teachers Association (ASTA).

Comments from students:

When I was looking for a violin teacher for the boys, the reason I selected you (over 4 other teachers I considered) was because of your obvious love of different kinds of music and the hope that you could share that passion with the boys.  Boy, did I make a good decision :-)  You have already given the boys (and Bruce and I) an amazing gift.  Thank you. - Willa Cree, mother of Nghia (age 12) & Anh (10)

I wanted to let you know that I received an email from Nghia's orchestra teacher this week.  She wanted to let us know how impressed she has been with Nghia's progress and his willingness to tackle hard pieces.  She is amazed that he has been playing for such a short period of time!!!  I let her know that I had a awesome son and he had an awesome violin teacher!!  Thank you. -Willa Cree, mother of Nghia & Anh (now ages 13 & 11)

I'm living full time now up in Oregon and just had my first lesson with my new fiddle instructor.  She complemented my old teacher saying what a fine job he did teaching me proper form and technique!  Hey that would be you! - John Unruh - hated to lose him as a student!

Thank you for all you do, I would have never found this much joy in playing if it hadn't been for you. - Brittany Copeland, adult student (and a nursing student also, although I'm not teaching that!)

I've been taking violin lessons from Tim for about a year.  I am twelve years old and I like playing the violin.  Tim is a very funny person and I enjoy going to his lessons.  He looks for ways that could help and improve my playing and I would recommend him 100%.  Even though I am there for an hour, it goes by pretty fast.  Oh yeah, he has a cool dog named Baby too! ~ Eric Ellis

Dear Tim,
Amanda did really well in the Jr. High All-State at the Higley Performing Arts yesterday.  Out of 28 first violins from the state, she made 4th chair.  Thank you for all your time spent helping Amanda!  We look forward to more great lessons and her learning much from you that will help her in High School.  Thanks!  Cyndi Cross

“Thanks to Tim Sadow, my lifelong dream of learning to play the violin is coming true.
Tim is an inspiring teacher.  He quickly assesses the student’s abilities and problems, and gives really useful advice to help the student break through to the next level.  After just a few lessons, I see my confidence and ability growing quickly.  I am amazed at how my tone has improved, and how comfortable I am in holding the violin and making music with it.  I especially enjoy the duets with Tim!  I think Tim has the unique ability to balance his own extraordinary musical talent, with genuine compassion for the beginning violinist.   His love of music is contagious!”  - Brenda McCaffrey, an adult student who obviously has a way with words!
